The opposition has demanded strict action against BJP MLA from Deoria Suresh Tiwari who stoked a controversy on Tuesday by telling people not to buy vegetables from the Muslim vendors.

Speaking to India Today TV, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Anurag Bhadauriya said, “Even in such challenging times when the entire nation is battling with the coronavirus outbreak, BJP leaders are busy spreading hate in the society. These people should be slapped with sedition charges and put in jail.”

UP Congress leader Lallan Singh said, “The state government has failed to help the poor who are badly affected due to the lockdown. The law and order situation continues to deteriorate in the state. The BJP leader has made a communal remark in order to divert attention from the real issues concerning the common man. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath must take note of the statement made by his party MLA and strict action should be taken against him.”

A video of Suresh Tiwari, BJP MLA from Barhaj assembly seat in Deoria district has gone viral in which he can be heard saying, “Keep this in mind and I am saying this openly, no one should buy vegetables from Muslims.”

Meanwhile speaking to media on his highly controversial remark, the BJP MLA said “I visited my constituency on April 18 where people told me that vendors of a particular community were contaminating vegetables with their saliva. Therefore in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, I advised people to avoid buying vegetables from such vendors. This issue should not be hyped.”
