Amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, the Governor of Nairobi, Kenya, Mike Sonko is giving out alcohol along with food items in the care packages that are being distributed to the people in need.

To fight Covid-19, people are staying at home. They are keeping the new virus at bay by washing hands thoroughly, sanitising and avoiding any form of physical contact. But according to Mike Sonko, alcohol is killing the novel coronavirus, therefore, it is being used as a throat sanitiser.

Yes, you read that right.

In a media briefing held last week, he confirmed that the Covid-19 care packages being distributed in Nairobi consist of small bottles of cognac, Hennessy.

In the video, he can be heard saying, “We are giving some small bottles of Hennessy in the food pack which we give to our people. I think from the research conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and various other health organisations, it has been believed that alcohol plays a major role in killing the novel coronavirus or any sort of virus.”

A Twitter user left a picture of the care package in the comments section.

However, WHO released a statement on the same day saying that alcohol does not protect against the novel coronavirus. The release stated, “Alcohol consumption is associated with a range of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and mental health disorders, which can make a person more vulnerable to Covid-19.”

The novel coronavirus has affected citizens globally. The new virus that was first reported in Wuhan, China has infected more than 22,40,191 people and taken 1,53,822 lives till April 18 across the world.
