Delhi stinks less with dip in garbage flow

Delhi used to produce more than 10,000 metric tonnes of waste on a daily basis. Now, it has come down below or around 7,000 metric tonnes.

As thousands of sweet shops remain shut during lockdown, the small and medium dairies are suffering huge losses and gallons of milk get wasted every day. Dozens of dairy owners, who were supplier of milk to the sweet shops, are now milking the bovines only once a day, and since there are no buyer in the market, gallons of milk get wasted.

Bhuttu Khan, who owns a milk processing and transportation unit at Rabupura in Jewar, says he is out of business as there is no demand of milk.

“There are two types of bulk customers in the dairy business – the ones who buy and supply milk, and the other ones are the sweet shop owners who use the milk to make dairy products. The supply chain of milk distributors is intact, but small and medium dairies who supply milk to the sweet shops, are completely dysfunctional as those shops are shut since the lockdown was imposed. We are doing nothing at all. All the milk is either getting wasted or being fed to the bovines,” he said.

“Since the Coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown, we have no business at all. We are one of the suppliers to Haldirams, a multi-chain sweet shop and eatery. On normal days, we used to supply 2,000 litres of milk to them. Since their shops are shut, the milk is getting wasted. It is very hard for us to survive in such a situation,” said Narendra Nagar, owner of a dairy farm at Kanarsi village of Greater Noida.
